Drainage of the stomach instead of two fingers in the mouth

Obesity began to be treated by draining food from the stomach

In America, the treatment of obesity has been approved for use by installing drainage in the stomach for excess food. The corresponding decision was made by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as reported in the press release of the FDA approves AspireAssist obesity device.

The AspireAssist device is a flexible tube endoscopically inserted into the stomach and attached to a discoid valve on the surface of the abdominal wall. 20-30 minutes after eating, the patient should connect an external tube to the valve and flush the excess food into the toilet within 5-10 minutes. The system is designed to remove about a third of the contents from the stomach, instead of which water is poured. So a person gets rid of extra calories and controls body weight without dieting.

The patient should be regularly examined by a doctor, adjusting the length of the inner tube – with a decrease in the mass and volume of adipose tissue, it can weaken the contact of the valve with the skin. To monitor the correct application, AspireAssist registers the number of connections to the external drainage and automatically stops working after 115 cycles (about five to six weeks of treatment), forcing a person to consult a doctor. If it is necessary to continue therapy, the limiter is replaced.

As stated on the website of the manufacturer Aspire Bariatrics, the installation procedure of the system takes about 15 minutes and is carried out under light sedation without general anesthesia. The patient can go home an hour or two after the intervention. AspireAssist is also removed in the laboratory, which takes about 10 minutes. The manufacturer emphasizes that due to the simplicity of the system, it is much cheaper than surgery to reduce the stomach.

The device is designed for people at least 22 years old with a body mass index from 35 to 55, who cannot cure obesity and maintain normal weight by non-surgical methods.

The FDA's decision was made based on the results of clinical trials involving 176 patients. All of them received assistance on diet and healthy lifestyle, and 111 members of the experimental group additionally installed AspireAssist. After a year, they lost an average of 12.1 percent of body weight versus 3.6 percent in the control group.

Side effects were transient and included dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea, as well as local discomfort after surgery.

Surgical methods of treating obesity were developed when it became clear that diets, exercise and drug therapy could not stop the epidemic of obesity and its complications at the population level. The most radical intervention is a type of gastroplasty (gastric reduction surgery). They are quite traumatic and are not suitable for all patients. Also, the imposition of an intestinal anastomosis, which turns off part of the stomach from digestion, has an impressive number of contraindications. Endoscopic operations are much better tolerated, in addition, they are reversible. In this way, gastric balloons are installed, for example, by inflating which the volume free for food can be adjusted. Aspiration, which is provided by AspireAssist, is also quite simple and low-traumatic, but less aesthetic and has inconveniences associated with the need to empty the stomach.
