Fatty dairy products reduce the risk of diabetes

Nutrition is the main factor in the emergence of the epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In a new study, scientists have confirmed the benefits of high–fat dairy products - contrary to popular belief. They hope to change dietary guidelines.

International dietary guidelines include regular consumption of dairy products as an important source of essential nutrients. In some countries, low-fat dairy products are recommended in order to limit the consumption of saturated fats. However, new observations of scientists refute the established standards regarding the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

A meta-analysis of 16 large clinical trials, in which over 60 thousand people participated, proved that higher levels of milk fat intake reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to the website of the UK Medical Research Council (Markers of dairy fat consumption linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes).

The reduced risk did not depend on other major risk factors – age, gender, physical activity and obesity, socio-economic status and other criteria.

Thus, the risk decreased by 30% in 1/5 of respondents who consumed the highest levels of milk fats compared to the quantile with minimal consumption.

"Our work provides the most comprehensive conclusions about the biomarkers of milk fats and their impact on reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. We will continue our research to determine all the tools and mechanisms of action, but now we can say for sure that an increased concentration of milk fat does not increase the risk of disease," concludes the lead author of the study Fumiaki Imamura.

The team hopes that their findings will change existing international dietary guidelines.

It is known that the vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes go through the stage of prediabetes, which can last for a long time with hidden symptoms. A team of Japanese scientists has discovered signs that allow for the effective diagnosis of this condition.
