Eurasian Biotechnology Federation

On April 15, 2010, an agreement on the establishment of the Eurasian Biotechnology Federation – EABF was signed in Moscow. The document was finally agreed and adopted within the framework of the II International Bioindustry Business Congress "EurasiaBio", which was attended by government representatives, leading scientists and business experts in the field of bioeconomics from all over Russia and 40 countries of the world.

The founders of EABF were Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, India, Mongolia, Austria, China and Slovenia, Finland expressed their intentions to join. In the future, the union will expand through the accession of other countries of the Eurasian region, including the post-Soviet space.

Preparation for the creation of the EABF was carried out for 2 years. The basic agreement on the establishment was reached at the First Congress of "EurasiaBio", since the association is necessary to promote the sustainable development of bioeconomics and cooperation in biotechnology in the Eurasian geopolitical area and beyond.

EABF will greatly facilitate the dialogue between scientists, industry, regulatory and government authorities, and business representatives engaged in the bioindustry.

The Professional International Association is also called upon to harmonize biosafety standards and other regulatory requirements, which require an open and continuous dialogue to develop common paradigms and further solutions.

The initiator of the creation of EABF from the Russian side was the Ovchinnikov Society of Biotechnologists of Russia (OBR) and the Union of Biotechnology Industry Enterprises.

"The establishment of the EABF is a natural result of the very active work of the biotechnological community of Russia over the past few years and the end of the 2nd Congress of "EurasiaBio", which brought together the elite of science and bioindustry, and exceeded all our expectations in terms of the level of participants," commented the President of the OBR Raif Vasilov. EABF is a fundamental decision that will have serious consequences for the development of the bioindustry in Russia. In fact, we are forming a new configuration of the biotechnological community and bioeconomics, and have given a powerful impetus to the development of international cooperation. We have finally announced Russia's bioindustry capabilities at the proper level."

The Association was established with the active participation of the Federation of Asian Biotechnological Associations.

According to the Secretary General of this Federation, Dr. Bhim Bazhaj from India, our countries should become strategic partners in the bioindustry, in particular, in nanotechnology and stem cells, vaccines and agriculture, and a number of specific projects have already been launched.

The official platform for dialogue and summing up the annual results of the work of the EABF will be the annual international Congress "EurasiaBio", which this year has already gathered more than 1,500 participants, 4 times more than the first congress.

In the near future, the procedure of legal registration of the EABF will be carried out, governing bodies and a network of regional representative offices in the participating countries will be formed.
