Proven: chronic insomnia permanently impairs memory

In Canada, a large-scale study of sleep disorders in people without any other complaints was conducted. Insomnia worsens mood, attention and concentration, but especially strongly affects memory.

About 10% of adults suffer from chronic insomnia. This condition is diagnosed if a person experiences problems with falling asleep and the quality of night sleep at least three times a week for at least three months. Now scientists know that this situation leads to cognitive impairment in people after 45 years, regardless of other factors.

Prolonged insomnia affects mood, attention and concentration. The team decided to evaluate these factors of daily functioning and analyzed the data of almost 30 thousand people, writes EurekAlert (Chronic insomnia and memory problems: A direct link is established).

Participants were divided into three groups: those with chronic sleep disorders, those with symptoms of insomnia, and volunteers with normal sleep quality. They underwent a series of examinations and tests, as well as filled out detailed questionnaires.

In the group of people with chronic insomnia, the worst results were observed. This was especially true of explicit memory, which people use when recalling events or meetings from the past.

At the same time, the results took into account other factors that could affect the cognitive abilities of the participants — clinical factors, lifestyle features, etc.

The findings open up even more questions for scientists. So, in subsequent studies, the team plans to find out whether it is possible to eliminate cognitive impairments with the help of sleep disorder therapy.
