How many cigarettes are in a bottle of wine?

The risk of cancer from alcohol was calculated in cigarette equivalent

Alexey Yevglevsky, Naked Science

Scientists from Southampton and Bangor Universities, using data from research organizations in the UK, assessed the risk of developing cancer when drinking a moderate amount of alcohol and compared it with the risk of developing cancer from smoking. The work was published in the journal BMC Public Health (Hydes et al., A comparison of gender-linked population cancer risks between alcohol and tobacco: how many cigarettes are there in a bottle of wine?).

According to WHO, tobacco use is the most significant risk factor for cancer, accounting for almost 22% of global cancer deaths. However, experts from the UK are concerned that people often do not treat the risk of cancer from alcohol consumption with the same caution.

To calculate the possible lifetime cancer risk associated with the consumption of ten units of alcohol (a bottle of wine) and ten cigarettes per week, the authors used data from research organizations such as Cancer Research UK, the National Statistical Service of Great Britain, ISD Scotland and others. The author of the study, Theresa Hydes, told about the assessments:

"We wanted to answer the question: "How many cigarettes are contained in a bottle of wine, if we consider only the risk of developing cancer, without taking into account other negative consequences?" We assume that the equivalent is five cigarettes for men and ten for women. This does not mean that drinking alcohol in moderation is equivalent to smoking. Here we write only about the development of cancer, especially since these indicators may differ on an individual level."

Experts have estimated that the lifetime risk of cancer in non-smokers who drink one bottle of wine a week increases by one percent for men and by 1.4 percent for women. In men, it is primarily associated with tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, and in women - with breast cancer. Drinking three bottles of wine a week was associated with an increased risk of 1.9 percent for men and 3.6 percent for women, which is equivalent, according to the authors, to eight cigarettes a week for men and 23 cigarettes a week for women.
