It is not necessary to lose weight thin

Weight loss is beneficial for obese people and can be dangerous for the thin

It is known that obesity can increase the risk of various diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Weight control can be an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of obesity and related diseases, although long-term weight change and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes have not been sufficiently studied.

Almost 200,000 people took part in the study conducted by American scientists. It turned out that obese people who managed to lose more than 4.5 kg of weight had lower risks of weight gain and the development of type 2 diabetes. However, in slim people, attempts to lose weight were associated with a higher risk of weight gain in the future and an increased possibility of developing type 2 diabetes.

Qi Song and his colleagues from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, USA, included healthy participants in three prospective cohort studies from 1988 to 2017. The age of the people ranged from 24 to 78 years, mostly women. Scientists grouped the methods that led to weight loss of more than 4.5 kg into seven categories: low-calorie diet, exercise, low-calorie diet plus exercise, fasting, commercial weight loss program, weight loss pills in combination with fasting, just pills.

Exercise proved to be the most effective way for long-term weight control and prevention in obese people and was associated with the least weight gain after four years.

After 24 years, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes decreased in all obese people, regardless of the chosen weight loss strategy: from 21% with exercise to 13% with pills. At the same time, people with excess weight, but without obesity, the risk of developing diabetes decreased by 9% with exercise and increased by 42% in those who took pills. In slim people, weight loss in any way was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes: from a 9% increase in exercise to a 54% increase in those who took pills.

The authors conclude that weight loss strategies should be used only by those who need them from a medical point of view.

"We were a little surprised when we first saw a positive association between trying to lose weight and gaining weight faster, as well as a higher risk of type 2 diabetes among lean people," says Qi Song.

The study was published in the open access journal PLOS Medicine (Si et al., Weight loss strategies, weight change, and type 2 diabetes in US health professionals: A cohort study).
