Just a couple of kilograms

Even a slight weight loss reduces the risk of bowel cancer by almost 50%

More than 154 thousand people of three age categories took part in the study, based on the results of which these conclusions were made. Scientists compared the weight of participants in different periods of life and showed how even a slight loss of kilograms significantly affects the risk of developing colorectal cancer. For men, this correlation turned out to be the most significant.

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality. Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for this type of tumor, but until now scientists did not know how weight loss affects the likelihood of developing bowel cancer.

The researchers analyzed the impact of weight loss and weight gain in people in three different age categories — youth, maturity and old age, writes EurekAlert. The sample consisted of more than 154 thousand men and women. All volunteers underwent a screening test for colorectal cancer before the experiment, and then again after 3 years and 5 years.

Observations have shown that, compared with a stable weight, losing 1-3 kg over five years reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by 46%. Weight gain, as expected, increased the likelihood of developing a tumor.

The greatest benefit from weight loss was received by people who were initially overweight, as well as young and middle-aged volunteers. The correlation was the most striking among men.

This underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy stable weight throughout life for cancer prevention, the authors said, and overweight people should pay special attention to these measures for the prevention of benign and malignant neoplasms.

Another important measure to prevent bowel cancer is to reduce the consumption of antibacterial drugs. Studies show that frequent use of antibiotics increases the risks by up to 50% and this is especially noticeable in young people.
