Prevention of uterine cancer is simple and effective

Exercise and coffee protect against uterine cancer

Half an hour of physical activity a day, a healthy diet and a normal body mass index, as well as drinking coffee significantly reduce the risk of uterine cancer. Such conclusions are contained in the joint report of the American Institute for Cancer Research (American Institute for Cancer Research) and the International Cancer Research Fund (World Cancer Research Fund International) on the prevention of endometrial cancer in 2013.

Cancer of the endometrium – the inner lining of the uterine body – ranks sixth among female oncological diseases in frequency.

The authors of the report, a team of specialists from Imperial College London, conducted a systematic analysis of the array of data obtained during 159 studies on endometrial cancer in 2012, and determined the relative role of nutrition, physical activity and body weight in the prevention of this disease. The expert panel, which includes 12 of the world's leading oncological specialists, agreed with the authors' conclusions.

According to the results of the analysis, regular physical activity (about 30 minutes a day), eating foods with a low glycemic index and a body mass index in the range between 18.5 and 25 can reduce the risk of uterine cancer by 60 percent. At the same time, the risk factors for the disease are obesity, especially the accumulation of fat in the abdominal area, and a sedentary lifestyle.

In addition, as the authors of the report found based on the results of eight studies, each cup of coffee, both with and without caffeine, reduces the risk of endometrial cancer by about 7 percent.

These data confirm the results of a study conducted by scientists at Harvard University in 2011. They found that women who drink at least four cups of coffee a day have a quarter lower risk of developing uterine cancer compared to those who limit themselves to just one cup of this drink. The researchers attributed the results to the fact that coffee reduces the level of estrogen and insulin in the blood – hormones predisposing to tumors of the uterine mucosa. The same effect explains why obesity, leading to a change in the hormonal background, on the contrary, increases the risk of endometrial cancer.
