Simple and effective

Therapeutic fasting helps to reduce not only weight, but also pressure

Another study of the popular "16:8" diet in the USA, known as the interval fasting system, showed interesting results. It turned out that over 12 weeks, during which the subjects received food for eight hours, after which they drank only water for 16 hours, the volunteers achieved a decrease in systolic pressure and body weight by an average of two and a half percent.

In a study published in Nutrition and Health Aging, scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago tried to evaluate the effectiveness of the popular "16:8" nutrition plan, the principle of which is very simple: 16 hours a day a person needs to drink only water or drinks with almost zero calories, such as water with lemon or green tea, in the remaining eight for hours, he can eat anything, and in unlimited quantities. This method seems very attractive to many, because it limits food consumption only to a time frame. You do not need to monitor the quality, quantity of food and calorie content of food.

A total of 46 people with a body mass index of more than 34 kg/m2 participated in the study. Scientists divided them into two groups with similar average indicators of height, weight, BMI, as well as by gender, age and race. The first group ate according to the "16:8" plan for 12 weeks (approximately from 10:00 to 18:00), the second group served as a control group.

In 12 weeks, participants from the active experimental group, unlike the control group, lost about 2.5 percent of their weight, which is about three kilograms. At the same time, their systolic pressure decreased by about seven millimeters of mercury. It also turned out that with this model of nutrition, the participants of the experiment consumed about 350 calories less than usual every day. Other indicators (cholesterol level, glucose level, diastolic pressure, fat mass) differed slightly.

Thus, scientists decided to prove that the time frame can be an effective way to reduce body weight even without counting calories. In addition, the results of the study have an important clinical significance, namely, a decrease in the upper indicator of blood pressure in overweight people.
