Sex almost never causes cardiac arrest, scientists say

RIA News

Having sex, contrary to popular beliefs, extremely rarely causes cardiac arrest and other problems in the circulatory system, said scientists who spoke at the conference of the American Society of Cardiology in Anaheim.

"Heart attacks themselves are an extremely dangerous phenomenon that most often leads to the death of a person, but we have shown that they rarely occur during sex. Now we have physical evidence that people with heart disease have nothing to fear," said Sumeet Chugh from the Heart Research Institute in Los Angeles (USA).

In recent years, statements have often appeared on the global network and in the media that an increased load on the heart and blood vessels during sexual acts can lead to the death of people suffering from heart disease and other problems with the circulatory system. On the other hand, scientists have recently discovered an unusual relationship between the frequency of procreation and heart disease, suggesting that people with a "problem" heart attract the attention of the opposite sex more.

Chu and his colleagues tried to figure out this problem by observing the health of about a million people living in one of the urban agglomerations in the northeastern United States over the past five years.

During this time, according to scientists, about 4.5 thousand people died from sudden cardiac arrest, which allowed them to check whether there is a connection between such a scenario of human death and sex. To do this, Chu and his colleagues compared how often the victims of cardiac arrest had sex with other people who died at the same time and had a similar age, bad habits and level of wealth.

As the analysis of medical records has shown, death during sex can really occur due to cardiac arrest. In total, about three dozen people died for this reason, and about half of them died after the completion of sexual intercourse. On the other hand, they make up only a small proportion of the total number of victims of cardiac arrest – 0.7%, and frequent sex had virtually no effect on the likelihood of ending life in this way.

For this reason, scientists believe that it is possible to say with a high degree of confidence that sex is safe for people with a problematic cardiovascular system, with the exception of a small category of people from a special risk group. It includes men aged 60 and over of African-American origin suffering from tachycardia and ventricular flicker.

They, as cardiologists have shown, die from sudden cardiac arrest during sex about 10 times more often than other people, but only if their partners do not provide them with emergency care. In the event that they are trying to save their lives, the probability of premature death of representatives of the risk group, as scientists note, is not much different from how often people die from other cardiac arrest options.
