There is no depression!

Psychiatrists told how to deal with depression

Anna Kerman, XX2 century

On November 29, a discussion was held in Moscow under the auspices of Abbott "DEPRECCII.NET ". The event got its name from the website of the same name dedicated to the issues of diagnosis (including self–diagnosis) and treatment of depression.

The discussion was attended by the author of the texts of the website, psychiatrist-psychotherapist, PhD, associate professor, senior researcher of the Department for the Study of Borderline Mental Pathology and Psychosomatic Disorders of the Federal State Medical University Scientific Center for Mental Health Victoria Chitlova and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Psychology of Omsk State Medical University Grigory Usov.

Doctors told the audience about the most pressing problems of the fight against depressive disorders. In particular, such problems include the high prevalence of depression: according to statistics, every tenth person in the world suffers from this disease, and at least one depressive episode in life is experienced by 17% of the population. According to experts of the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2020 depression will be the second leading cause of disability in the world, and by 2030 it will become the largest source of the burden of disease.

Doctors stressed that it is necessary to distinguish depression from "bad mood".

Primdepression is a common mental disorder characterized by low mood, depression, loss of interest, or anhedonia, feelings of guilt or low self–esteem, sleep or appetite disorders, fatigue and poor concentration.

Like any serious disease, depression does not tolerate self-treatment and is poorly treated with "folk remedies". To effectively get rid of depression, the intervention of a specialist is necessary: a psychiatrist. But to ask for help, you must first realize that there is a problem. And then the website comes to the rescue DEPRECCII.NET , where, in addition to materials about depressive disorders, special tests have been published for preliminary detection of depressive symptoms in oneself or in a loved one. Of course, an online test cannot replace a diagnostic conversation with a doctor, but such a questionnaire is quite capable of helping to assess the condition and determine the need for medical care. The site also contains addresses of specialized medical institutions that treat depressive disorders and other mental illnesses. With the help of the website, a person can find a psychiatrist in his city, which will significantly increase the chances of timely initiation of treatment.

According to the participants of the discussion, Russians have already started discussing problems related to depression with doctors. More and more people aged 20 to 40 independently seek help from psychiatrists. However, in general, in Russian society, the stigmatization of psychiatric patients persists, so the diagnosis of "depression" is still preferred to hide. Perhaps in the future, as information about depressive disorders becomes more popular, this situation will change.
