Tooth loss and heart disease

Adults who have lost their teeth due to non-traumatic causes have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases - these are the conclusions of one of the reports at the Middle East Conference of the American College of Cardiology, held jointly with the 10th Congress of the Emirates Society of Cardiology in Dubai on October 3-5.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, and previous studies have already linked cardiovascular events with oral diseases - inflammatory diseases that often lead to tooth loss due to the destruction of periodontal tissues.

The causal relationship between inflammation in the oral cavity and cardiovascular diseases has not been sufficiently studied, so this study conducted a secondary analysis of the results of a large study in 2014, which examined cases of tooth loss caused by non-trauma, as well as cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, angina and stroke).

The study involved 316,588 people from the United States aged 40 to 79 years. 8% were missing all teeth, 13% had cardiovascular diseases. 28% had cardiovascular diseases and were toothless, and only 7% had cardiovascular diseases, but all their teeth were intact.

In addition, among the participants who reported absence from one to five or six or more (but not all) teeth also had a higher probability of developing cardiovascular diseases, even after taking into account other factors such as body mass index, age, the presence of bad habits, diabetes and the frequency of dental examinations.

The results obtained confirm the relationship between dental health and the health of the cardiovascular system. Tooth loss can accompany other health problems. Clinicians should recommend adequate dental care to people of this age group in order to prevent diseases that lead to tooth loss, and possibly thereby reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the future.
