RIA News

Not all dietary supplements are equally useful. Marina Anikina, a neurologist-rehabilitologist, chief physician of the "Clinic of Dr. Anikina", Candidate of Medical Sciences, told about supplements whose medicinal properties are clearly exaggerated in an interview with Sputnik radio.

Biologically active additives should be treated as carefully as medicines, these are not safe "sweets", she noted. In particular, taking dietary supplements that stimulate the brain can lead to psychotic disorders, the doctor warned.

"Any stimulating supplements to improve the functioning of the brain can have a negative impact, because it is necessary to understand why the brain does not work well. Either he has suffered or is suffering an infection, or you have worked too hard, and the brain is in a period of accumulation of resources. If at this unfavorable moment you start stimulating your brain, you can get a psychotic reaction, irritability and sleep disturbance," she said Anikina.

As an example of a dietary supplement, the reception of which may be risky, she cited ginkgo biloba extract. It is believed that this drug improves blood circulation and slows down brain aging. But treatment with its help can lead to both positive and negative consequences.

"There are many examples when taking this dietary supplement was safe enough, but there are also examples when teenagers used it before exams, and it caused them psychotic disorders. This drug caused a similar reaction in elderly people who suffer from dementia," Anikina explained.

There are many dietary supplements that are undeservedly considered effective means. According to the doctor, most supplements do not have half of the medicinal properties attributed to them. So, doctors found out that the complex of Omega fatty acids-3-6-9 it is not able to prevent the development of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

"According to studies that concerned cardiology, in particular, coronary heart disease, this drug has not shown its effectiveness, and now it is not recommended to use it in order to slow down the development of coronary heart disease, as well as atherosclerosis of the cerebral arteries," Marina Anikina said.
