Scientists: recycling increases the risk of heart attack

Nina Burmistrova, TASS Too long a working week can have truly disastrous consequences for human health, repeatedly increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and often leading to premature death.

Experts from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health came to this conclusion.

An international team of scientists led by Finnish professor Mika Kivimaki conducted a meta-analysis of 25 studies covering more than 600 thousand people from Europe, Australia and the USA. They were able to establish that those who spend more than 55 hours a week at work have a 33% higher risk of heart attack or stroke and 13% higher risk of coronary heart disease than those who work only 35-40 hours.

In the analysis, the experts took into account factors such as age, gender and socio-economic situation of a particular person, as well as the impact of smoking, alcohol consumption, insufficient physical activity, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

"The longer the working day, the higher the risk of stroke becomes. So, for those who work 41-48 hours a week, it increases by 10%, and for those who work 49-54 hours - by 27%," says Kivimyaki (in a press release University College London Working long hours linked to higher risk of stroke – VM).

According to him, those who have to stay at work for a long time should closely monitor their lifestyle, measure blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar more often.

Most of the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) spend time at work in Turkey – over 50 hours a week 43% of the population work. The situation is best in the Netherlands – only 0.6% of residents have such a long working week here, in Finland, for example, 6% of men and 2% of women, and in the OECD as a whole, this indicator is 12% for men and 5% for women.

Attempts to stop the trend when an employee is busy for 10 or more hours a day are being made at the legislative level: for example, EU directives prescribe that the duration of the working week should be limited to a maximum of 48 hours.
