Tibetan pig was cloned for the first time in Tibet

The first cloned Tibetan pig was born in the Tibet Autonomous Region /Southwest China/ on December 3, marking the first successful cloning by somatic cell transplantation in the region. This was reported today in the regional Department for Science and Technology.

The pig was born at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Tibetan Pig Research Center of the Tibetan University of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (TAAHU), the researchers also used a supercooling technique to permanently preserve its somatic cells.

The Tibetan pig, mainly inhabiting the Qinghai-Tibetan Highlands, is a rare species of pig, can inhabit highlands, cold and mountainous areas.

"This step is part of efforts to protect the Tibetan pig species from the threat of African swine fever, which has appeared around the world in recent years," said Shang Peng, head of the research group at the TAAHU Tibetan Pig Research Center.

"This marks a breakthrough for Tibet in the field of animal cloning and will play an important role in the method of breeding the Tibetan pig," said Chilai Wangi, head of the Regional Department of Science and Technology.
