A new generation bandage

A new method of injury protection has been developed in the USA

West Siberian Scientific Center

The Battelle organization, with the assistance of the US Department of Naval Research (ONR), has developed a new bandage that allows not only to bandage the injury, but also to minimize damage from injury for up to 3 days.

The new system is called ACCSIL (Acute Care Cover for the Severely Injured Limb) (literal translation – "First aid for acute limb injury"). It will consist of 2 components: an external coating, the purpose of which is to match the shape of the damaged surface, stop blood loss, keep the body warm and prevent dirt from entering; an internal, biologically active coating, which consists of a special chemical compound based on antibiotics and an anesthetic, designed to maintain tissue moisture and prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.

It is planned to use this system in the field by paramedics and military medics.

"The successful development of this system will allow military doctors to solve tasks that are currently unsolvable," said Kelly Jenkins, director of the Advanced materials department of industrial and medical direction at Battelle. "Modern bandages do not prevent infection, so many doctors have to improvise using plastic wrap and a lot of tape. It will be much more convenient to use ACCSIL."

K. Jenkins notes that ACCSIL's ability to preserve and disinfect wounds for 72 hours will be most valuable, especially in combat zones, where transporting the wounded to the hospital can take several days.

"The goal of the development is not to heal, but to preserve," Jenkins notes. "We want to 'stop time' to keep the wounds fresh and give surgeons up to 72 hours to treat the wound."

It is planned to use ACCSIL not only for military purposes, but also in industrial conditions, on ships, submarines and various civilian scenarios such as agriculture, car accidents or terrorist attacks.
