RIA News

A biosimilar of eculizumab, the most expensive drug in the world, was created in Russia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said in a statement.

Eculizumab is used to treat rare diseases – paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (APG) and atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aGUS).

The cost of an annual course of eculizumab use in the world reaches 45 million rubles. A year of treatment of one patient with APG in Russia is 26-27 million rubles, a patient with aGUS – 35-37 million rubles.

"The drug created by a Russian company with state support will cost 25% less than the original. At the same time, the funds received from the implementation of the project will be used for the further development of domestic biopharmaceuticals," the press service quotes the words of the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov.

With the entry into the market of the world's first biosimilar eculizumab, Russia will have the opportunity to provide them to all patients in need, as well as to terminate the monopoly of the American manufacturer that has existed since 2011, the minister stressed.
