A roll-up made of human skin :)

Human skin will be replaced by genetically modified tobaccoAlexey Tymoshenko, GZT.RU

Biologists have proposed a new source of human collagen – the main protein of the skin and connective tissue. Scientists have created a genetically modified tobacco that produces collagen.

The market volume of medical products created using collagen is about $30 billion a year, and there are not so many sources of this protein, and all of them have their drawbacks. Part of the collagen is obtained from animal raw materials, but at the same time it is necessary to carefully ensure that dangerous viruses do not get into the final product. If we take directly human collagen from the bodies of the deceased, then in addition to the inevitable ethical problems, there is also the question of a shortage of the source material.

Collagen is used to make materials used in skin grafts and surgical operations. To meet the need of hospitals for it, a group of scientists from the Hebrew University of Tel Aviv has created transgenic tobacco, which synthesizes human collagen along with the plant proteins it is supposed to.

The description of the discovery is presented in the journal Biomacromolecules, and CollPlant Ltd, based on the Hebrew University, plans to deal with the commercial side of the issue. The potential profit that the university can count on is estimated at several million dollars a year.
