A step to victory over cancer

Scientists are close to creating a universal vaccine against cancer

Pavel Vanichkin, TASS

"For the first time we managed to create an intravenous vaccine using nanoparticles," said Ugur Sahin, head of the research group, director of the Institute for the Study of Oncological Diseases at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (in a press release BioNTech AG Nature publication describes the first example of a clinically applicable and systematic mRNA cancer immunotherapy vaccine – VM). – In principle, we are talking about a vaccine that can be applied to all types of cancerous tumors."

The scientist said that it is not preventive, but "therapeutic in nature", in other words, it is designed not to prevent cancer, but to be used in their treatment. According to him, the vaccine has already passed "encouraging tests" on mice and several people with melanoma. However, the final results of its effects on these sick people will be known in about a year. After that, the researchers plan to conduct more extensive tests on sick people. Ugur Sahin suggested that the drug would be approved for use in about five years.

A report on this work by an international team of scientists is published today in the journal Nature (Systematic RNA delivery to dendritic cells exploits antiviral defense for cancer immunotherapy – VM).
