- Animal donors are waiting for approval
The UK government is going to allow the cultivation of human organs in the bodies of other animals, in particular, pigs and sheep, in the coming week. This is reported by The Telegraph (Human organs grown in animals could be given green light in Britain).
To this end, the Scientific Committee on Animals of the British Home Office (analogous to the Ministry of the Interior) This week I have planned to publish the first guide on the use of chimeras (animals with separate human organs).
The Committee intends to show the prospects and safety of using human organs grown in the body of other animals. According to scientists, this will solve the problem of the shortage of donor organs (heart, kidneys and liver).
Pigs and sheep are considered the most promising animals for growing human organs. Scientists note that the new organs will not be alienated, since stem cells of a person in need of a transplant will be used for their cultivation.
According to British law, the relatives of a deceased person can prohibit the use of his organs for transplantation, even if he previously allowed it. In addition, as the newspaper notes, currently doctors are faced with an increased number of substandard organs for transplantation. Experts attribute this to an aging population and an increase in the number of overweight people.
Experiments with chimeras are already being conducted in the USA (without transplanting grown organs to humans) for scientific purposes. "We can make an animal without a heart. We have created pigs that do not have skeletal muscle tissue and blood vessels," said cardiologist Daniel Harry from Minnesota.

So far, there is no question of growing full–fledged "chimeras" - current experiments should show whether the development of a human organ in an animal's body is possible in principle.
