Aubrey de Grey is coming to us

An extravagant biogerontologist suggests ways to preserve eternal youthFrom February 28 to March 4, the world-famous biogerontologist Aubrey de Grey is coming to Russia for the first time.

The guest plans to meet with Russian scientists who deal with the problems of aging, with journalists at the scientific cafe, give public lectures at Moscow State University and the House of Scientists, take part in a scientific seminar on aging of the Science for Life Extension Foundation, sign a memorandum of cooperation between this organization and the Methuselah Foundation headed by him. The visit was organized by the national Foundation "Science for Life Extension" together with the Institute of Aging Biology and the Gerontological Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Aubrey de Grey is a world–famous British biogerontologist. He works at Cambridge and is the editor-in-chief of Rejuvenation Research, the only peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to the effects on aging. Aubrey de Grey's main research interests are the study of cellular and molecular damage that occurs during aging. According to his concept, the elimination of these injuries will allow us to develop methods of rejuvenation of the body and prolong the life of representatives of even living generations up to a thousand years.

De Grey identifies seven main categories of biological processes that lead to damage that causes aging. According to his concept, these categories have been known for a long time, no new ones have been discovered over the past 20 years. Meanwhile, methods to prevent or combat undesirable changes in each category are either already known or may be developed in the foreseeable future based on existing technologies.

It is assumed that the anti-aging therapy of the first generation will increase life expectancy by 20-30 years at once. And since science and medical technologies are developing faster than violations accumulate, these years will be enough to develop a new generation of life extension methods, which again will buy time to create even more advanced rejuvenation technologies. In other words, De Grey suggests fighting for eternal youth, instead of fighting diseases caused by old age. Some scientists consider Di Gray's ideas extravagant and fantastic. However, he also has followers.

In order to collect, analyze and systematize the currently known methods of combating the causes of aging, the scientist founded the project "Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence" (SENS), which he leads with the support of the University of Cambridge. Financial support for research is also provided by the Methuselah Foundation, where Aubrey de Grey is chairman and Chief Scientific Officer.

The Foundation has announced several permanent competitions among scientists who develop methods of prolonging life and improving its quality, the total budget of which has reached $ 1 million today. So, for example, the creator of a long-lived laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) will receive a bonus every week, until the record of the lifetime of this mouse is broken. The amount of the prize depends on how long the record lasts, hypothetically, if the new record is twice as high as the previous one, the winner will receive half of the prize pool.

For reference:
The Institute of Aging Biology is a private research organization registered in April 2007. The Institute was created by the former co-owner of Euroset Timur Artemyev after the completion of the sale of the company to Alexander Mamut.

The term "minor aging" was coined in 1990 by Caleb Finch, at that time an employee of the University of Southern California, later Finch and Austad (Finch and Austad 2001) described in more detail the signs of "minor aging": in some animals (perch, sturgeon, turtle, bivalve mollusk, lobster), neither physical activity, nor disease resistance, nor reproduction rates decrease smoothly with age. This is reported by the Informnauka agency.
