The city's first Scientific and Educational Center for Molecular and Cellular Technologies has been opened in St. Petersburg
The Scientific and Educational Center for Molecular and Cellular Technologies has been opened on the basis of the St. Petersburg Chemical and Pharmaceutical University, and the event is timed to the celebration of the university's 100th anniversary.
"The opening of this center is our next contribution to the development of Russian biotechnologies," Igor Narkevich, Rector of SPHFU, said during the ceremony.
He reminded the audience that St. Petersburg University (formerly Leningrad Chemical Institute) It was the first university in the Soviet Union to teach biotechnology as an academic discipline: after the creation of the Russian penicillin by St. Petersburg scientists, specialists in the production of antibiotics were urgently needed. Today, SPHFU already has three departments that are engaged in the development of biotechnologies and the training of relevant specialists, and the new center will become another scientific and educational platform.
On the basis of the REC, work has already begun on the development of spheroid tumor cell models, as well as a cell model of type II diabetes. In addition, among the scientific interests of the center is the creation of diagnostic systems for the determination of biomarkers of various pathologies and the creation of a national program for the design of scientific experiments (design of the experiment). Together with BIOCAD, a new master's program "Biomedicine and Bioengineering" has been developed, part of the training activities of which will be conducted on the basis of the REC MKT.
Investments in the creation of a new scientific and educational center amounted to more than 20 million rubles.
