- California has become the fifth US state to allow euthanasia
Doctors were allowed to prescribe to terminally ill patients who had no more than six months to live, potent medical means to end their lives. Earlier, the document was approved by the Senate and the lower house of the California parliament.
"I do not know what I would do if I were dying with prolonged and excruciating pain," the governor said, "However, I am sure that it would be convenient to use the opportunities provided by this law. And I will not deny others this right."
The main provisions of the law coincide with those in force for 18 years in Oregon. According to them, the incurable disease of the patient and his life expectancy must be confirmed by at least two doctors. The patient must make a corresponding request three times, he will have a waiting period, and only after that the doctor will be able to prescribe a lethal drug. The law on euthanasia should be revised again in 10 years.
Meanwhile, opponents of the law fear abuse. In their opinion, seriously ill people may be inclined to death due to the severity and high cost of treatment. The Catholic Church equates euthanasia with suicide and considers it a sin.
Euthanasia was previously legalized in the states of Oregon, Washington, Montana and Vermont.
