Canavero is recruiting a team

Chinese scientist will help transplant the head of a Russian programmer

Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero has named a future partner for the world's first human head transplant. This is reported by the Chinese news agency "Xinhua" (Head scientists pair up for disputed 'Frankenstein'surgery').

Together with Canavero, the operation will be performed by Chinese surgeon Ren Xiaoping from Harbin University of Medicine. "Ren Xiaoping is the only person in the world who is able to lead this project," Canavero said. He added that the work of a Chinese specialist in the field of clinical etiology (the study of the causes of the disease) determined his choice of partner.

To date, Ren's team has performed about a thousand head transplant operations on mice, while the maximum life span of the animal after transplantation was one day. For the first time he managed to transplant the head of one mouse onto the body of another in 2013.

Such operations cause ethical discussions in the medical community. In China, where Ren is based, there are no laws that would prohibit such procedures, the news agency notes.

The first patient of Canavero and Xiaoping may be a 30-year-old programmer from Vladimir, Valery Spiridonov. He suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, a genetically determined and incurable disease. Earlier, an Italian doctor said that the operation could be performed as early as 2017, however, according to Xinhua, Canavero and Ren have yet to find funding and assemble an international team of doctors and nurses for transplantation.
