Cord Blood Gemabank
The Institute of Human Stem Cells has opened a Gemabank in Ukraine, a bank for personal storage of cord blood stem cells.Gemabank, which turned 5 years old in 2008, became one of the first institutions in Russia to collect umbilical cord blood at birth, extract stem cells from it and store them at an ultra-low temperature for many years. Gemabank was created on the basis of the Russian Blokhin Cancer Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RSC) and uses in its work his experience in cryopreservation and cell transplantation, as well as the experience of specialists from the USA and Europe, where the first cord blood banks appeared in 1992.
Gemabank considers Ukraine a promising direction and, in addition to providing cord blood storage services, is going to actively cooperate with leading Ukrainian transplantologists to improve the quality of transplants. The Institute of Human Stem Cells plans to develop scientific activities and research related to the introduction of new methods of treatment, as Ukraine has a good scientific potential for this.
Gemabank is creating a laboratory and storage facility in Ukraine that meet the highest international standards, which will allow Ukrainian citizens to receive services of European quality.
Director of the Moscow Gemabank, Prikhodko A.V.: "The main activities of Gemabank are investing in the development of cellular technologies and the development of cord blood banking in Russia, the CIS, Europe and Asia. The number of cord blood storage facilities is increasing all over the world. In Russia and the near abroad today, this service is still represented minimally due to the small number of banks and stored samples that may be in demand in the treatment of oncohematological diseases. It should be noted that the importance of personal banking services was proved in 2005 in the treatment of grade 4 neuroblastoma in a child using cord blood stem cells, which were stored in the Hemabank."
