Mandatory genomic registration of unidentified bodies has been introduced in Russia

RIA NewsMandatory genomic registration of unidentified bodies has been introduced in Russia, the corresponding document was published on the Kremlin's website on Tuesday.

The federal law signed by the President on Monday amends the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation. As before, unidentified bodies are subject to mandatory photographing and fingerprinting, and their cremation is not allowed. Now, the requirement for mandatory state genomic registration of unidentified bodies is legally fixed.

This document was developed pursuant to the decision of the meeting of the interdepartmental commission of the Security Council of the Russian Federation on public security.

The procedure for genomic registration is established by the Government of the Russian Federation.

The purpose of genomic registration is to identify a person's identity. Genomic information contained in fragments of human deoxyribonucleic acid is necessary for the prevention, disclosure and investigation of crimes, as well as for the identification of criminals.
