The International Day of the Elderly is celebrated on Tuesday

Alexey Malgavko, RIA NovostiThe International Day of the Elderly is celebrated on Tuesday; according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, more than 33 million elderly citizens live in Russia today.

The International Day of Older Persons (International Day of Older Persons) is celebrated by decision of the UN General Assembly annually since October 1, 1991, in order to draw public attention to the problems of elderly people.

"In Russia, more than 33 million people are elderly people who need care and attention from society and the state. And I am deeply grateful to each of you for your invaluable contribution to the development of our country, for the accumulated experience that you pass on to future generations, for your energy and active lifestyle. You are not only wise mentors for your children and grandchildren, but also the pride and heritage of the whole country," Maxim Topilin, Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, said in a congratulatory message.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the gender disparity of the population older than working age persists in Russia.

"At the beginning of 2013, there were 1,522 thousand women per 1,000 men aged 60 to 65. Despite the presence of multiple chronic diseases (from 6 and more), women have a higher life expectancy. In the coming decade, it is expected that the growth of the population over the working age and its share in the total population of Russia will continue, and the number of people aged 80 years and older will grow at a faster pace," the ministry noted.

Retirement workAccording to the Ministry, currently about 13 million pensioners are employed in the country's economy, which is about 18% of the total employed population, of which 9.7 million workers are over working age (men over 60 and women over 55).

"In recent years, there has been a steady trend of increasing the employment of pensioners: after retirement, every third pensioner continues to work," the report says.

According to Topilin, problems in the social sphere remain, but the authorities strive to provide a decent standard of living for older people: index labor pensions ahead of inflation, provide social support measures and provide high-quality social services, including at home.

"Today, about 7 thousand social institutions and departments work for the elderly and disabled in the country, and it is extremely important that comfortable conditions are created in them to provide all necessary assistance to those in need. To reform the industry, introduce new principles, including the principle of targeting, we have prepared a bill on the basics of social services for the population," the minister stressed.
