Don't wait for a compatible donor

A donor kidney should not be a perfect match for the recipient

News from Reuters: Good match not always needed for living donor kidney transplant

The results of a study conducted by scientists from Johns Hopkins University (John Hopkins University) led by Dorry Segev (Dorry Segev) indicate that it is not necessary to look for an ideal donor for a kidney transplant.

The authors found that people who had an incompatible kidney transplant lived 8 years longer than those who did not have a kidney transplant due to the lack of a suitable donor. The eight-year survival rate among patients who underwent HLA–incompatible transplantation was 77%, among those to whom a kidney was transplanted from a cadaver donor – 63%, among patients to whom a kidney was not transplanted - 44%.

This indicates, the researchers explain, that it is not always worthwhile to select a perfectly suitable donor for kidney transplantation, it may take several years to find such a donor (or it may never be found), and an HLA-incompatible kidney can be found in just a few months. The data obtained may lead to the fact that kidney transplant operations will be performed more often.
