FEBS-2013: all flags to visit…

Eleven Nobel laureates will come to St. Petersburg for FEBS-2013

RIA NewsEleven Nobel Prize laureates will be plenary speakers of the upcoming international scientific forum in the history of modern Russia, the 38th Annual Congress of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) in St. Petersburg in the summer of 2013, Alexander Gabibov, President of the Russian Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists representing Russia in FEBS, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti.

"The FEBS Congress is one of the five largest, with a rich history of world forums in the field of life sciences. The only time the USSR was honored with its holding was in 1984 in Moscow. Unprecedented interest has been shown in the upcoming congress, one example of which is the growing number of Nobel Prize laureates who have expressed a desire to participate in it. Recently, the 1989 Chemistry Prize winner Sidney Altman joined this list," he said.

"Such a large number of Nobel laureates is a rarity for world forums. Their arrival at FEBS-2013 indicates that Russia is regaining its leading positions in a number of scientific areas," the agency interlocutor noted.

More than two thousand delegates, more than 300 speakers from almost all leading scientific centers of the world will come to the upcoming scientific forum.

"It was decided to dedicate a separate symposium "The World of RNA" within the framework of the congress to the memory of the recently deceased outstanding molecular biologist Marianne Grunberg-Mango – a native of Petrograd, former president of the French Academy of Sciences. She was a great friend of Russian science," the scientist said.

By order of the Government of the Russian Federation, the organization of the Congress is entrusted to the Ministry of Education and Science.

"The organizing committee of the Congress has started its regular work under the leadership of the Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov. Largely thanks to this, it was possible to solve the problem that threatened the holding of the congress," Gabibov added.

Earlier it was reported that there is a risk of disruption of the congress due to disagreements with the International Naval Salon (IMMS) on the simultaneous holding of congress and salon events at the Lenexpo site.

"The conciliation Commission of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Education and Science has settled this issue," the agency interlocutor said.
