Fill the wound with silk

Scientists have found a way to heal wounds without scars

RIA News

A group of scientists from China has developed a gel based on silk protein, which is able to heal wounds without leaving scars. Their study is described in the journal Biomaterial Science (Qi et al., Sericin hydrogels promote skin wound healing with effective regeneration of hair follicles and sebaceous glands after complete loss of epidermis and dermis).

In their work, scientists used the substance sericin, which is contained in silk fibers. After extraction from silk, scientists applied ultraviolet light and a photoinitiator to the substance to cross-link the protein chains of the substance.

As a result, they received a gel that grows well to the cells and almost does not cause an immune reaction of the body, suppressing inflammation and stimulating the development of new blood vessels. At the same time, the gel regulates the work of skin cells in such a way that new skin grows at the site of damage, not scar tissue. The gel also has antiseptic properties, which is why the wound can heal faster.

In addition, the proteins contained in silk have natural bioactivity. According to scientists, this is due to the fact that the composition of sericin amino acids is similar to the composition of amino acids of human skin proteins.

Scientists claim that their development is the most effective in treating wounds and preventing scars to date. They hope that after the final study of all the properties of the new product, the gel will be widely used in medicine.
