For the particularly unintelligent, we repeat: to live a long time...

If you want to live a long time and not get sick, do not smoke and monitor your blood pressure level. Each of these factors is responsible for 20% of deaths among the adult population of the United States, scientists say. The results of their study were published in the April issue of the online publication PLoS Medicine (Goodarz Danaei et al., The Preventable Causes of Death in the United States: Comparative Risk Assessment of Diet, Lifestyle, and Metabolic Risk Factors - VM).

It has long been known that problems with blood pressure and smoking can cause premature death, but the significance of the influence of these factors on health surprised even researchers who took up this issue. A team of scientists led by Majid Ezzati, a professor at Harvard University, also found that other factors, such as nutrition, metabolism and lifestyle, significantly affect a person's life expectancy. Among the main factors of influence are distinguished:

  • smoking;
  • lack of physical activity;
  • salt abuse;
  • consumption of insufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables;
  • high blood sugar;
  • high levels of "bad" cholesterol;
  • overweight or obese;
  • high consumption of trans fats;
  • low consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids;
  • low intake of omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish);
  • alcohol abuse.

The researchers used data from surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics to determine how many lives could be saved and deaths prevented if risk factors were at an optimal level. The optimal level of smoking meant the complete absence of a bad habit. Overweight or lack of physical activity led to 1 death out of 10. The most dangerous factors of nutrition are high intake of salt and trans fats. In this regard, scientists advise you to measure your blood pressure and cholesterol levels more often and not to smoke.
