Genomes of various types of cancer – in a single database

The British have started creating a database of tumor genomesCopper news

British oncologists have begun to compile a database of genomes of various types of cancerous tumors. According to The Daily Telegraph (Cancer DNA database could revolutionize treatment), the initiative of the Cancer Research UK charity organization is aimed at studying the hereditary information of tumor cells and developing new treatment methods based on this data.

As part of this initiative, specialists from three laboratories in London, Cardiff and Birmingham will collect and study the genomes of tumors of various organs that were detected at an early stage in nine thousand Britons. Oncologists will search for genes that are of key importance for the development of certain malignant neoplasms.

After that, patients will undergo genetic testing for the presence of these genes. Depending on the results of these studies, patients will be selected the optimal therapy for this type of tumor.

Currently, two dozen patients with melanoma and one patient with ovarian cancer have started research. In addition to these types of tumors, the British intend to study the genomes of malignant neoplasms of the intestine, lungs, as well as the mammary and prostate glands.

Upon completion of all work, specialists will assess the feasibility of mass introduction of such genetic screening among cancer patients. The Cancer Research UK project is designed for two years. It is planned to spend 5.5 million pounds on its implementation.
