Human cloning: prohibition in the third reading

The State Duma has banned human cloningRIA News
The State Duma on Wednesday adopted in the third reading a government law on extending the temporary ban on human cloning.

The document provides that until the entry into force of the federal law, which establishes the procedure for using cloning technologies for human cloning, a temporary ban on this action is introduced.

The document, which amends Article 1 of the law "On the Temporary Ban on human cloning", at the same time does not prohibit the cloning of organisms for other purposes. We are talking about the possibility of cloning cells and organisms for research purposes, cloning organs for transplantation and animals. The moratorium on cloning expired on June 23, 2007, and the law itself was adopted in 2002.

Cloning is still the subject of serious discussion in society from the point of view of ethics. The technology of human cloning has not yet been fully developed, and its supporters face many legal, ethical and religious problems.

As the first deputy head of the United Russia faction, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation Tatyana Yakovleva, recalled earlier, a ban on human cloning has now been introduced in almost all countries. And this precaution, in her opinion, is quite understandable.

The deputy noted that from a practical point of view, human cloning has two purposes – reproductive cloning for obtaining offspring (especially relevant for infertile people) and obtaining embryonic stem cells, treating diseases and organ transplantation. However, Yakovleva admitted that so far the arguments about the benefits of cloning are more theoretical in nature, since there is no exact scientific data.

The expert is sure that conducting an experiment on human cloning now is an absolutely irresponsible step, since "the current level of scientific development is not ready for this," and "experiments on animal cloning have shown that in most cases various developmental anomalies have been detected."
