The Lasker Prize in Biomedical Research has been awarded in the USA since 1945. During this time, 87 prize winners subsequently received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In 2017, the prize was awarded to Michael Hall for the discovery of TOR proteins, John Schiller and Douglas Lowy for technologies for creating a vaccine against papillomavirus and Planned Parenthood for working with millions of women in the field of reproductive health.

This year, Ellis from Rockefeller University and Grunstein from California State University in Los Angeles will receive a prize in basic research for "discoveries showing how gene expression is affected by chemical modification of histones" - proteins in which DNA strands in chromosomes are packed.

Glen, a Scot who previously worked for AstraZeneca, and has now retired, was noted for the discovery and development of propofol, the world's most popular drug for anesthesia, in the late 1980s - 60 million doses of this drug are administered annually in the United States. Argetsinger Staitz from Yale University is engaged in RNA biology and public activities to support young scientists and women in science, for which he will receive a special prize.

In each nomination, scientists will receive 250 thousand dollars, the award ceremony will take place on September 21 in New York.
