Macaques are getting more expensive

SSC "Vector" buys primates again

"New Siberia"

Fifteen rhesus monkeys aged 3-4 years weighing 4-6 kg are purchased by the State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector". The winner of the competition, information about which is posted in the Unified Information System in the field of procurement, will deliver 15 individuals to the institution.

An important requirement for monkeys is the absence of specific antibodies to the Sars–CoV 2 coronavirus. In addition, primates must be clinically and laboratory healthy, have a typical appearance and physique, body temperature from 37.5 to 39.5 ° C. Animals should also not have any previous experience of participating in scientific research.

Recall that in September 2020, Vector held a competition to create a model of infectious diseases on such monkeys. For 31 males of the Macaca mulatta species (rhesus macaques or Bengal macaques), the center was ready to pay no more than 9.55 million rubles, while the tasks of the winner of the competition included not just the supply of animals, but also the selection of genetically appropriate primates, conducting their comprehensive examination and preparing for research work. Thus, the current minimum price per individual is 25.6% higher than the autumn one.

It is known that rhesus monkeys have a high biological similarity to humans and therefore are one of the most popular laboratory animals. Thanks to them, humanity was able to defeat many deadly diseases.
