Measles vaccine will help cure prostate cancer

American scientists have discovered that some strains of the measles virus used in vaccines can help in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. In an experiment on mice, these viruses effectively infected and destroyed tumor cells.

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic injected a vaccine strain of the MV-CEA virus into mice with prostate cancer at the stage when the tumor had sprouted into neighboring tissues or metastasized to other organs. Complete removal of the tumor by surgical or other methods in such cases is impossible.

It turned out that in mice injected with the virus, the average life expectancy doubled compared to the control group that did not receive treatment. A fifth of the mice from the experimental group had a complete cure from the tumor and metastases.

Virus treatment – virotherapy – is thus promising for the fight against inoperable prostate cancer. The fact that the method is safe enough is evidenced by the experience of millions of people vaccinated against measles with the used strain of the virus. Another advantage of virotherapy for prostate cancer is that it is fully compatible with other types of treatment for this disease. In the near future, the researchers plan to move on to testing the method on humans.
