The bionic prosthetic arm developed in Novgorod is 10 times cheaper than analogues
Novgorod Engineer, Head of the Department of Innovative Developments of NPO Kvant Stanislav Muravyov has developed a high-tech bionic prosthetic arm, which is 10 times cheaper than Western analogues. According to the correspondent of IA REGNUM, the Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation got acquainted with the development during a working visit to the Novgorod region Maxim Topilin.
Stanislav Muravyov noted that the most advanced prostheses available today – high–tech bionic prostheses - are very expensive: their cost reaches 2-3 million rubles, and domestic solutions are either under development or are copies of outdated foreign models.
Muravyov set the task to develop an "inexpensive and sufficiently functional prosthesis that is not inferior to Western analogues" and created a model worth from 100 thousand to 200 thousand rubles, which allows not only to take objects (for example, a ballpoint pen), but even to use a computer mouse or spray flowers from a spray gun – a total of 11 different actions are available.
The use of such a prosthesis was demonstrated to Minister Topilin by volunteer Tatiana, who has a congenital malformation of the hand and fingers. Another volunteer will be a 23-year-old serviceman who lost his arm in the process of serving.
"I think this segment is very promising. It is clear that technologies are developing. The main thing here is not to make it worse than foreign analogues. It seems to me that our specialists – both hands and brains – can make it better," said the head of the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation.
The Minister expressed regret that at the moment the production of bionic prostheses in Russia is "in its infancy."
It should be noted that every year in Russia about 6 thousand people become disabled as a result of arm amputation, while 57% of them are people of working age.
