Obesity is more dangerous for men than for women

UPI's Copper News: Obesity is more deadly for men than women

The results of a meta-analysis of studies involving about 4 million people from 189 countries indicate that 19% of men and 11% of women with normal weight do not live to 70 years. Among obese people, the indicators were different: in this case, the risk of death before the age of 70 among men increased to 30%, and among women – up to 15%.

The authors analyzed the results of studies in which people aged 20 to 90 years took part, observations of which lasted for five years.

Richard Peto (RichardPeto) from Oxford (UniversityofOxford) notes that a 10% reduction in weight will reduce the risk of premature death by 10% in women and 20% in men.

So far, researchers have not been able to understand why excess weight is more harmful for men than for women. In one of the previous studies, it was shown that the risk of diabetes and insulin resistance in men was higher than in women. It is possible that this also affects life expectancy.

However, getting rid of extra pounds will benefit representatives of both sexes. The researchers also concluded that a lack of weight is also associated with an increased risk of premature death.

According to experts of the World Health Organization, the spread of obesity in the world is becoming an epidemic. This year, WHO reported that the number of fat people living on the planet exceeded the number of thin people for the first time. Numerous studies have already confirmed that excess weight causes heart problems, can provoke the development of diabetes and even cancer.
