The governor of St. Petersburg on December 7 on the air of Radio Russia said that the increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in the Northern capital could lead to the most stringent quarantine measures.

"The time has come for St. Petersburg when very little separates us from a complete lockdown. Fighting the epidemic is a mutual responsibility. Let's take a chance and follow the rules," Beglov said in a weekly radio address. He added that the authorities are discussing several options for further education of schoolchildren – from long vacations to distance learning. "Due to the seriousness of the situation, such a step in our city is also not excluded. We are also discussing the option of extending winter holidays for students of grades 5-11," Beglov said.

He stated that St. Petersburg hospitals and polyclinics are working at maximum capacity, and doctors are at the limit of their capabilities. "Before the New Year, we have somewhere to hospitalize severe patients with covid. Then there is a "red line", followed by the cancellation of planned medical care in hospitals and the transfer of all clinics to an infectious regime," the governor warned.

According to the mayor, coronavirus hospitals receive 800 new patients every day. He added that 11 thousand specialized beds have already been deployed in the city for the treatment of patients with coronavirus and community-acquired pneumonia, and by the end of the year their number may increase to 13 thousand. In two or three days, hospitals are ready to deploy additional capacities, but, according to Beglov, the city authorities will do this only as a last resort and now the task is to reduce the rate of infection.

"It is very important that the New Year celebrations and the long weekend from January 1 to January 10 help St. Petersburg to avoid the development of events according to the most unfavorable scenario," the governor noted.

According to the federal operational center on December 7, the daily increase in cases of COVD-19 in St. Petersburg amounted to 3741.
