Collaboration and alternative financing is key to future development, say industry leadersDuring the round table organized by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development at Tufts University, representatives of the pharmaceutical industry came to the conclusion that cooperation is the key to increasing the speed of development and introduction of new medicines to the market.
They also noted that the recent and expected waves of patent protection expiration of many of the best-selling drugs are prompting the pharmaceutical industry to search for new development paradigms.
According to Kenneth Kaitin, director of the Tufts Center, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, outsourcing research organizations, research centers, investors involved in the development of medicines are interested in a partnership based on the sharing of information. Such a partnership will help diversify risks, as well as increase productivity in the field of research and development. A joint approach to the development of medicines can help in the discovery of innovative drugs, and it will take less time to bring them to market than before, and the developments themselves will become more productive.
According to the report of the Tufts Center, cooperation in the form of alliances and consortia will increase the effectiveness of clinical trials and reduce their costs, while preserving only specialized functions for drug developers. Reducing internal research budgets will help increase the importance of new sources of funding, such as venture philanthropy and syndicate financing.
At the same time, functional outsourcing in order to reduce costs and distribute risks associated with the development of new medicines can lead to data fragmentation, in particular due to the lack of generally accepted standards and appropriate IT solutions. However, it should be noted that there are already programs designed to help solve this problem.
