President of the Russian Academy of Sciences: the priority direction is medicine and especially oncology

The priority area of scientific activity today is medical research and the creation of new drugs, and special attention of scientists should be paid to the fight against cancer, said the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Osipov, ITAR-TASS reports. "We consider the most important area of activity to be those studies that are directly aimed at humans," he said. "I mean fundamental medicine, the design of new drugs, the study of biology issues that are directly related to human health."

In particular, according to Osipov, the search for an effective drug against cancer requires close attention of scientists. "We need to make serious progress in a number of areas of cancer treatment," he stressed. This direction, in his opinion, is so important that it requires the announcement of a special national program. "There are so many new ideas and such opportunities in the country now that such a program needs to be announced," Osipov said, stressing that a number of academics and well–known doctors hold this opinion.

The Head of the Russian Academy of Sciences also noted that there are other priorities in scientific activity arising from the tasks set by the state. So, according to him, the most important research is in the field of nanotechnology. In addition, he said, the main guidelines, which "hardly makes sense to list," are determined in each of the areas of fundamental science – mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and humanities.
