Record increase in life expectancy

The life expectancy of cats and dogs in Israel has increased by 42%

Jewish.ruAccording to a study conducted by Dr. Eitan Kreiner, founder of the Makkabim veterinary Clinic, over the past decade, the life expectancy of pets in Israel has increased by an average of five years, from 12 to 17 years, that is, by 42%.

Dr. Kreiner emphasizes that pets not only began to live longer, but also became healthier.

The author of the study explains the sharp increase in the life expectancy of pets by several factors. Including the fact that the owners of cats and dogs have more information about pets and their needs, and new medicines and technologies have appeared on the market.

Dr. Kreiner says that in the past, infectious diseases such as rabies, influenza (in cats) and parvovirus have become the main cause of premature death of pets. Many animals died as a result of accidents. But now the owners have begun to pay more attention to the prevention of infectious diseases. They do not forget about timely vaccination and treatment of helminths; pay attention to the condition of the teeth of pets, buy food supplements and try to give their pet food appropriate to his age and needs.

He also notes that the life expectancy of pets has been affected by the fact that veterinary services have become more accessible. During the reporting period, the number of veterinarians in Israel increased by 170%. If 1,500 veterinarians had a license in 1999, today more than 4,000 specialists have graduated from veterinary faculties.

In addition, advanced treatment methods have been used in veterinary medicine. For example, in recent years, 16 corneal transplants have been performed on pets.
