Russian genome: fast and cheap

Scientists have deciphered the genome of the Russian<url>
Scientists have deciphered the individual genome of a Russian, that is, a person belonging to the corresponding ethnic group.

It is not specified to which specific ethnic group he belonged. The work was carried out at the Russian Scientific Center "Kurchatov Institute" and took six months, ITAR-TASS reports, citing the words of the head of the genomic direction of the "Kurchatov Institute" academician Konstantin Scriabin.

For decoding, experts used a supercomputer of the Kurchatov Institute (pictured) and algorithms developed by Russian mathematicians. Algorithms are necessary in order to "assemble" a single DNA sequence from the pieces obtained during the procedure.

The agency writes that the project to decode the genome of a Russian was cheaper than similar projects carried out earlier abroad. However, the cost of the work is not specified.

Earlier, the genomes of several other nationalities were decoded in other countries. The first people to receive such an honor were Nobel laureate and one of the discoverers of the structure of DNA James Watson, as well as biologist Craig Venter. Later, the DNA sequences of an Asian and an African were determined. In total, eight individual genomes have been decoded to date. Comparing individual DNA sequences, not composite ones, especially when it comes to representatives of different ethnic groups, is very important for scientists. Such studies will clarify the biochemical and other differences between the races.

More recently, one of the American biotech companies announced that it has developed a technology that allows you to decipher the human genome for 4.4 thousand dollars. The very first genome was decoded for more than $3 billion.
