Scientists of Yakutia will transplant skin to people

NVK SAKHA

In Yakutia, they are working on the removal of a biotechnological dermal equivalent and are already planning to start transplantation to people from January next year, according to NVK Sakha.

The project is being implemented jointly with the Burn Department of the Republic of Belarus No. 2 and with the support of the Ministry of Health of the RS (Ya).

"The project team is big. We have created a special interdepartmental creative team, which includes biotechnologists, clinical specialists (doctors of the burn center) and consultants," said NVC Sakha Ivan Troev, Research engineer, Head of the Laboratory of Cellular Technologies and Regenerative Medicine of NEFU.

Now scientists are at the stage of experimental development, have received permission from the Ethics Committee and the Ministry of Health of the RS (Ya) and from January 2018 will begin transplantation on human patients of the Burn Unit of the Republic of Belarus No. 2.

"We extract the dermal equivalent from pieces of the patient's skin, then cultivate these pieces in the laboratory. We remove fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) from them, multiply them under special conditions in an incubator," Ivan Troev explained.

Then the dermal equivalent is placed on the substrate – the plane on which the cells settle. Now the main task of the laboratory is to choose a substrate (matrix) and reduce the time of cell growth. It is planned to achieve cell growth in 10 days.

According to statistics, every fifth patient of RB No. 2 comes with severe forms of frostbite and burns. Dermal equivalent transplantation will allow a large number of patients to repair damaged skin areas.

The project of scientists was presented at the exhibition "Heat of Permafrost" in the Expocentre Fairgrounds as part of the Days of Yakutia in Moscow.
