Sex at 70 is getting better and better!

Information about the sexual life of older people is very limited and mainly concerns sexual problems that grow over the years, while very little is known about the "normal" sexual behavior of this age group.

Swedish scientists from the University of Gothenburg studied the attitude to sex of five representative population samples that were interviewed in the periods 1971-1972, 1976-1977, 1992-1993 and 2000-2001. In total, more than 1,500 people aged 70 took part in the study, who answered questions concerning various aspects of their sexual life, including sexual dysfunction, marital satisfaction and sexual activity.

The authors found that over the past 30 years, the number of 70-year-olds of both sexes who continue their sexual life has increased. Moreover, for married men, this indicator increased from 52% to 68%, for married women – from 38% to 56%, for single men – from 30% to 54%, and for single women – from 0.8% to 12%.

In addition, the number of women who report high sexual satisfaction and experiencing orgasms during sex has increased. Fewer women noted the complete absence of orgasms.

While the number of older women who are not satisfied with their sex life has decreased, more men report a low level of satisfaction. The authors suggest that the reason for this is that in recent years it has become more acceptable for men to admit to failures in the sexual field.

Scientists also note that the number of elderly men suffering from erectile dysfunction has decreased, but the frequency of ejaculation disorders has increased. At the same time, the proportion of men suffering from premature ejaculation has not changed.

An interesting fact is that both women and men unanimously accuse men of ending sexual relations. This result corresponds to the data obtained by the authors of other works carried out in the 1950s and in the period 2005-2006.

According to experts, the data obtained emphasize the importance and positive role of sexual relations in the lives of older people and are a valuable addition to the existing information and sexual behavior of this age group.
