Sick, wake up! It's time to take a sleeping pill!

Forgetful patients will be given pills with microchipsCopper news
The pharmaceutical company Novartis will introduce an automatic system reminding patients about taking medications, The Financial Times reports.

(This article is only available to subscribers, so if you want to know more, read another one in The Wall Street Journal – VM.) The reminder system was developed by the specialists of Proteus Biomedical.

The development includes a receiver that is attached to the patient's shoulder. Thanks to the microchips that are implanted into each tablet, the receiver tracks each intake of the drug. If the patient has not taken the medicine at the time set by the doctor, the receiver sends him a text message with a reminder.

According to Joseph Jimenez, director of the Novartis Medicines department, during the testing of the new development, the compliance of taking medications with doctor's prescriptions increased from 30 to 80 percent within six months.

Jimenez noted that in order to implement the new Novartis system, contracts have yet to be signed with Proteus Biomedical, as well as standards for its use have to be developed together with practitioners.
