Society does not help the elderly to chew their food thoroughly

There is no one to monitor the oral hygiene of the elderly

Radio SwedenPoorly brushed teeth and poor oral hygiene can lead to malnutrition and even fatal diseases when a person is old and helpless, research shows.

Assistance in performing these basic hygiene procedures is not always provided in nursing homes.

Municipal authorities do not always believe that dental cleaning assistance is included in the mandatory package of home care when assessing the size of the necessary services for the elderly.

Only one commune out of 20 takes into account the needs for such services, a survey conducted by the Union of Dentists shows.

How important is oral hygiene in old age, emphasizes Gunilla Klingberg, Chairman of the Union of Dentists:

– The process of destruction of teeth and gums can go very quickly, in a few weeks. When a person is unable to chew food, it can lead to weight loss and exhaustion, and oral bacteria can contribute to pneumonia, a disease that can be fatal for bedridden patients with weakened immunity, she says.
