Stem Cell Registry: St. Petersburg, 2012

St. Petersburg will have its own stem cell registry by 2012. This was reported to journalists on Tuesday, March 17, at a press conference dedicated to the development of cellular technologies in Russia.

It is specified that 10 thousand samples should be prepared by 2012. Such a bank, according to doctors, will greatly simplify the treatment of hematological diseases – for example, leukemia.

"Currently, Russia does not have its own stem cell registry, so to treat patients with transplantation, you have to buy cell samples from Western European or American colleagues. The average cost of one such purchase is 20-40 thousand euros," said Alexander Smolyaninov, MD, founder of the Pokrovsky Stem Cell Bank.

He emphasizes that the Pokrovsky Bank created by his efforts, in which a stem cell registry is being created, is currently working only at the expense of private investments.

According to A. Smolyaninov, it is not necessary to count on the support of the state in the conditions of the financial crisis. According to the doctor, the creation of its own register will cost the bank 15-20 million dollars.
