Stem cells against viral hepatitis

According to Pharmvestnik, on March 21, 2011, Chinese scientists from Sun Yat-sen University announced the launch of phase II clinical trials of transplantation of allogeneic mesenchymal bone marrow stem cells to patients with hepatic insufficiency of viral etiology (hepatitis B virus).

The results of phase I clinical trials have shown the safety of this technique for liver function and the immune status of patients.

The aim of phase II studies is to evaluate the effectiveness of the allogeneic mesenchymal bone marrow stem cell transplantation technique in patients with hepatic insufficiency caused by the hepatitis B virus.

Control group A consists of 30 patients receiving standard comprehensive treatment, including antiviral drugs.

Group B consists of 90 patients receiving standard comprehensive treatment, including antiviral drugs, as well as intravenous injections of allogeneic mesenchymal bone marrow stem cells four times, 1 time per week. Moreover, group B is divided into three subgroups, according to the number of cells transplanted to the patient.

The end of the research is scheduled for July 2012. The interim results of the research will be announced in November 2011. You can follow the progress of the work on the site page ClinicalTrials.gov : Allogeneic Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplantation in Patients With Liver Failure Caused by Hepatitis B Virus (HBV).
