Stem cells and sarcopenia

A remedy for senile infirmity is named

Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center have concluded that age-related muscle atrophy can be managed by maintaining the existence of muscle stem cells. This is reported in the press release Stem Cells May Be the Key to Staying Strong in Old Age.

All adult organisms retain pools of stem cells that play a role in the regeneration of damaged tissue or the growth of a new one. With age, more and more cells die, but the main cause of atrophy was considered to be the loss of muscle communication with neurons responsible for muscle control.

Scientists removed stem cells from laboratory mice without damaging motor neurons. The loss of cells provoked rapid muscle atrophy, which began in adulthood. However, in elderly genetically modified animals resistant to depletion of the stem cell pool, the muscles remained healthy. Such results show that senile infirmity is not associated with the degradation of nervous tissue.

The researchers believe that their conclusion will allow them to begin searching for drugs that support the life of stem cells for as long as possible.
